Why We Moved The RunPod Blog

BY ZHEN LU - MAY 28, 2022
Hi everyone, this isn't really an important event or anything, but you may have noticed that the RunPod blog has moved from blog.runpod.io to runpod.io/blog. At first glance, this seems like a pretty trivial change - I mean, why bother? It hasn't been a trivial transition, but hopefully it will be worth it in the end. Let's talk about why we ultimately decided to do this and what the pros and cons are (that we've found so far). Spoiler: worse editor, more customizability, better??? SEO.

We recently made some changes to our blog. We moved it from a subdomain to a nested path and switched from a traditional platform to a headless CMS.

There were a few reasons for these changes. First, we wanted to simplify our URL structure. A subdomain can be its own mini website, which can be confusing for users. Nested paths are simpler and easier to understand.

Second, we wanted more control over the design and user experience of our blog. A headless CMS gives us that flexibility. We can now create a custom design that better matches our brand and make it easier for readers to find the content they're looking for.

Third, We were told by several SEO experts that a subdomain can hurt our search engine rankings. While there are several online articles claiming that a subdomain is now recognized as being part of the main site by google, many others claim it still isn't as good as using a nested path. We're really not sure who to believe on this one, but since there were other reasons to move, we figured we may as well bite the bullet and do it earlier rather than later.

If you're interested in the tools that we're using, we used to be on the ghost blogging platform using their managed pro subscription. To be honest, the editor was great to use and we loved the simplicity of the platform. But it was just too limiting in terms of design and functionality for what we wanted to do, as we wanted to manage content on other parts of our main site as well. We also didn't love that it was hosted on a subdomain.

We're now using storyblok.com our headless CMS. It's been really great so far! We love the flexibility it gives us in terms of design and functionality. And we don't have to worry about our blog being hosted on a subdomain anymore.

Overall, we're happy with the changes we've made. Our blog is now more integrated with our main website, even though we have had to give up the simplicity of the ghost editor. We can't tell what the future holds, but the trade-off has been worth it for us so far. We hope you find the new blog design easy to use and that you enjoy the content!
