Runpod vs Crusoe

Crusoe and Runpod both rent NVIDIA GPUs by the hour, and that is roughly where the similarity ends. Crusoe is an energy company that built data centers next to its own power generation and sells the capacity. Runpod is an AI developer cloud you can start using in a browser tab. The right choice depends far less on hourly rate than on whether you want to talk to a salesperson first.

The clearest evidence is Crusoe's own pricing page. Its newest silicon is not priced publicly at all.

What each company actually is

Crusoe runs three businesses: energy, data centers, and cloud. It builds generation and compute together, which is a genuine structural advantage for very large, long-running training jobs where power cost dominates. The cloud is the retail end of an infrastructure company.

Runpod is a developer platform. You sign up, pick a GPU, and a pod is running in under 30 seconds. There is no contract, no minimum, and no procurement step. More than a million developers have used it, and companies including OpenAI, Perplexity, Replit and Cursor run workloads on it.

That difference shows up in every part of the comparison below.

On every other card both publish (aside from the H200), Runpod is lower, and on A100, L40S and MI300X it costs roughly a third less.

But the more useful column is the one that says "Contact sales." GB200, B200 and MI355X have no published rate, and neither does any Crusoe spot price. If you want current-generation Blackwell from Crusoe, the first step is a conversation. On Runpod a B200 is {{gpu:b200}}/hr and a B300 is {{gpu:b300}}/hr, both self-serve.

The part the table cannot show

Crusoe's cheapest published GPU is an L40S at $1.50/hr. Runpod has ten cards below that: RTX 5090 at {{gpu:rtx-5090}}, L40S at {{gpu:l40s}}, RTX 6000 Ada at {{gpu:rtx-6000-ada}}, L40 at {{gpu:l40}}, RTX 4090 at {{gpu:rtx-4090}}, RTX A6000 at {{gpu:rtx-a6000}}, RTX 3090 at {{gpu:rtx-3090}}, L4 at {{gpu:l4}}, A40 at {{gpu:a40}}, and the RTX A5000 at {{gpu:rtx-a5000}}.

This is not a discount. It is a different idea about who the customer is. A lot of real AI work does not need an H100. Fine-tuning a 7B model, running Stable Diffusion, serving a small classifier, testing whether an idea works at all: these run happily on a 24GB consumer card, and paying data center rates for them is waste. Crusoe does not offer that tier because its business is built around large committed capacity.

Where Crusoe is the better answer

Very large training runs with committed capacity. If you need hundreds of GPUs reserved for months, Crusoe's vertical integration is real and its contract motion is built for exactly that. Reserved pricing is where its economics work hardest.

GB200 NVL72 at scale. Crusoe offers rack-scale Blackwell. Runpod does not.

MI355X specifically. Crusoe offers AMD's MI355X with 288GB. Runpod does not. If that card is what you need, Crusoe has it and Runpod cannot help. On MI300X, though, see the table: Runpod is $2.39/hr against Crusoe's $3.45.

Power and sustainability as a procurement requirement. If your organization is answering questions about where the electricity comes from, an operator that generates its own has an answer most clouds cannot give.

Where Runpod is the better answer

You want to start today. Sign up, deploy, done. No sales call, no access request, no contract review.

Your workload is bursty or uneven. Serverless scales to zero between requests, so a job that runs a few hours a day does not pay for the other twenty. Per-second billing means a fifteen-minute experiment costs fifteen minutes.

You do not need a data center GPU. The sub-$1/hr tier does not exist on Crusoe's published list.

You want to grow without switching vendors. Teams start on a pod, move to Serverless, and expand into Instant Clusters on the same platform. There is no replatforming step between the experiment and production.

You want to see the price before you commit. Every Runpod rate is published, including the newest cards.

How to choose

The question is not which is cheaper. On the cards both publish, the gap runs in Runpod's favor everywhere except H200, and by margins that matter far less than picking the wrong shape of provider.

Ask instead: do you know exactly what you need for the next six months?

If yes, and it is large, Crusoe's reserved pricing and committed capacity are designed for you, and a sales conversation is a reasonable price to pay.

If no, or if the honest answer is that you are still finding out, then a platform that lets you start in a browser and change your mind next week is worth more than a rate card. Most teams are in the second group for longer than they expect.

Is Crusoe cheaper than Runpod?

Not on most published rates. Crusoe's H200 is $4.29/hr against Runpod's {{gpu:h200}}, so it is cheaper there. On H100 SXM, A100 and L40S, Runpod is lower, by roughly a third on A100 and L40S. Crusoe does not publish rates for B200, GB200 or MI355X, so those cannot be compared without contacting their sales team.

What does Crusoe Cloud cost?

Can I use Crusoe without talking to sales?

Partly. Six GPU models have published on-demand rates you can use self-serve, and Crusoe has added self-serve inference deployments. But the newest hardware and all spot capacity route through sales.

Does Runpod offer AMD GPUs?

Yes. MI300X with 192GB VRAM is $2.39/hr on Secure Cloud, against Crusoe's $3.45/hr for the same card, so Runpod is about 31% cheaper on ROCm workloads. Crusoe additionally offers the MI355X with 288GB, which Runpod does not.

Which is better for fine-tuning a small model?

Runpod, on cost grounds. A 7B fine-tune does not need an H100. An RTX A5000 at {{gpu:rtx-a5000}}/hr or a 4090 at {{gpu:rtx-4090}}/hr will do it, and Crusoe's cheapest published card is $1.50/hr.

Which is better for training a frontier model?

Crusoe, if you need rack-scale GB200 and can commit to reserved capacity. That is the workload its whole business is built around.
