DigitalOcean is a general-purpose cloud. Droplets, Kubernetes, managed databases, object storage, load balancers, an app platform. GPU Droplets are one product in that catalog, sitting alongside Bare Metal GPUs, an Inference Engine and a model library.
Runpod is GPU infrastructure. Pods, Serverless and Clusters, running standard Docker images, with no managed database or CDN to go with them.
If you need the surrounding platform, that is a genuine reason to pick DigitalOcean. If you need the accelerator, the gap on rate and catalog is large.
On-demand rates
DigitalOcean’s published on-demand GPU Droplet rates, read 9 September 2026:
Against Runpod’s Secure Cloud rates, the same cards run at {{gpu:h200}}/hr for the H200, {{gpu:h100-sxm}}/hr for the H100 SXM, {{gpu:l40s}}/hr for the L40S and {{gpu:rtx-6000-ada}}/hr for the RTX 6000 Ada. Community Cloud sits below all of those.
The gap on the H100 and H200 is substantial and runs in Runpod’s favor. The gap on AMD runs the other way: DigitalOcean’s MI300X is $2.59/GPU/hr against Runpod’s $2.39/hr on Secure Cloud, verified 31 August 2026, so Runpod is lower there too, but DigitalOcean carries MI325X, MI350X and MI355X, which Runpod does not.
What DigitalOcean bundles is real and should not be waved away. Every GPU Droplet ships with 5TiB of scratch NVMe and 10,000 to 15,000 GiB of transfer included. For a workload that reads and writes large datasets locally, that scratch disk has value a bare hourly comparison misses.
Two billing details that cost money
The 5-minute minimum. DigitalOcean bills GPU Droplets per second with a 5-minute minimum billing period. Runpod bills Pods per second with no minimum. On short experimental runs, and on any burst pattern where instances come and go, that floor adds up.
Powered-off Droplets are still billed. DigitalOcean’s own FAQ is explicit: powering off a GPU Droplet does not stop charges, because disk, CPU, RAM and IP remain reserved. Billing stops when you destroy the instance. That is a common and expensive surprise, and it means turning it off overnight does not work the way people expect.
On Runpod, a terminated Pod stops costing anything. A stopped Pod with a network volume attached continues to incur storage charges only, from $0.05/GB/mo. The distinction between stopping and terminating is worth understanding on either platform.
Reserved and spot
DigitalOcean publishes 12-month reserved rates at $3.26/GPU/hr for the HGX H100, $3.40 for the HGX H200, $7.94 for the HGX B300, and $1.91 to $4.76 across the AMD Instinct line. Those require a contractual 12-month commitment and route through sales.
They also publish spot rates on the HGX B300 at $11.19/GPU/hr, MI355X at $4.50 and MI350X at $4.00. Spot Droplets are interruptible with a target of two hours’ notice, and DigitalOcean states that notice may be shorter or absent in emergencies.
Do not read those spot rates against a Runpod on-demand rate. They are a different product with a different risk profile, and on the B300 the published spot rate is currently higher than the 12-month reserved rate, which is worth checking directly before relying on either.
Runpod’s lower-cost tier is Community Cloud, which is not preemptible. Reserved clusters with SLA-backed uptime and discounted rates are available for teams scaling to 10,000+ GPUs.
The Paperspace question
DigitalOcean acquired Paperspace, and some of what was Paperspace now sits inside DigitalOcean’s AI product line. Where DigitalOcean wins
You need the rest of the cloud. Managed Postgres, Kubernetes, object storage, load balancers, an app platform and a CDN, on one bill with one support relationship. Runpod offers none of that.
The AMD lineup is deeper. MI300X, MI325X, MI350X and MI355X, on demand, spot and reserved. Runpod publishes MI300X only.
Bundled scratch and transfer. 5TiB of local NVMe and up to 15,000 GiB of transfer per GPU Droplet is genuinely useful for data-heavy work.
You already run there. If your application, database and storage are on DigitalOcean, keeping the GPU beside them removes a network hop and a vendor.
Predictable monthly caps on the wider platform, which is a large part of why teams choose DigitalOcean in the first place.
Where Runpod wins
Rate on the NVIDIA cards that overlap. The H100 and H200 gaps are the clearest single argument in this comparison.
Catalog depth. 21 NVIDIA cards against four on demand. DigitalOcean publishes no NVIDIA card between the RTX 6000 Ada at $1.57/GPU/hr and the H100 at $4.41, and nothing in the RTX 40 or 50 series.
No minimum billing period and no charge for a Pod you have terminated.
No egress fees at all, rather than a bundled transfer allowance you can exceed.
Scale-to-zero inference. Runpod Serverless bills per second of active worker time with sub-200ms cold starts via FlashBoot.
Self-serve multi-node. Clusters provision from the console up to 64 GPUs. DigitalOcean’s Bare Metal GPUs route through sales.

Compliance
Runpod is SOC 2 Type II certified and HIPAA and GDPR compliant, with SOC 2 reports, BAAs and DPAs available for security review through the Runpod Trust Center. Secure Cloud adds network isolation for workloads with stricter compliance needs. Coverage can vary by region and deployment model, so check requirements for your workload. Which one should you choose: DigitalOcean or Runpod?
Choose DigitalOcean if the GPU is one component of an application you also want to host, if you need managed databases or Kubernetes beside it, if you want AMD hardware beyond the MI300X, or if the bundled scratch disk and transfer allowance suit a data-heavy job.
Choose Runpod if the accelerator is the workload, if you need a card DigitalOcean does not carry, if per-second billing without a minimum matters, if you move enough data that a transfer allowance would bind, or if you need multi-node training without a sales call.
The honest summary: these overlap less than the rate tables suggest. DigitalOcean is selling a cloud, and the GPU Droplet is priced like a component of one. Runpod is selling the accelerator. On the NVIDIA cards that appear in both catalogs, Runpod is meaningfully cheaper. On everything surrounding the GPU, DigitalOcean has products Runpod does not build.
