Wan 2.7 is Alibaba's newest video generation model, announced in April 2026. If you came here to download the weights and run it on your own GPU, the short answer is that you can't – not yet, and not through anyone. Wan 2.7 is available through Alibaba's own API surfaces only.
That doesn't leave you stuck. This guide covers what Wan 2.7 does, why it isn't self-hostable, and the two paths that get you generating video on Runpod today.
What Wan 2.7 actually is
Wan 2.7 is a family of four models rather than one checkpoint: text-to-video, image-to-video, reference-to-video, and video editing. Alibaba released the suite on 7 April 2026, days after the companion Wan2.7-Image model.
What's new compared with Wan 2.6:
- Thinking mode. The model interprets and plans a prompt before generation starts, rather than mapping straight from text to frames.
- Unified multimodal input. Text, image, video, and audio feed one system covering generation, editing, continuation, and reference-based production.
- Director-level editing. Natural-language instructions change character actions, dialogue, appearance, scenes, style, and camera work on an existing clip.
- Lip-synced dialogue rewriting. Edit the script and the model re-syncs lip movement while preserving the original vocal signature.
- Cross-video consistency for up to five distinct characters, each with its own voice and visual identity.
- Two to 15 second clips at 720p or 1080p.
The shift is control. Wan 2.6 made a clip from your prompt; Wan 2.7 is built to let you keep directing it afterwards.
Is Wan 2.7 open source?
No. The official Wan-AI organisation on Hugging Face publishes weights up to Wan 2.2 – the most recent release there is Wan2.2-Animate-14B, from November 2025. There are no Wan 2.5, 2.6, or 2.7 weights.
Alibaba's announcement points to Model Studio, the Wan website, and the Qwen App, all hosted API surfaces. You may see third-party posts claiming an Apache 2.0 release for Wan 2.7; that isn't supported by Alibaba's announcement or by anything on Hugging Face.
This matches Wan 2.5 and Wan 2.6. Since Wan 2.2, newer models have stayed behind an API while the 2.2 family remains the newest generation with downloadable weights.
Can you run Wan 2.7 on Runpod?
Not currently. Runpod's public endpoints cover Wan 2.6, Wan 2.5, Wan 2.2, and Wan 2.1. With no public weights, Wan 2.7 can't be deployed to a pod the way Wan 2.2 can. This guide will be updated if and when that changes.
What to run instead
Where each version stands today:
- Wan 2.7 – no public weights, and not available on Runpod.
- Wan 2.6 – no public weights. Available as managed endpoints, from $0.10/second.
- Wan 2.5 – no public weights. Available as a managed image-to-video endpoint, from $0.25 per five seconds.
- Wan 2.2 – weights are public. Available as an endpoint at $0.30 per five seconds, or self-hosted on a pod from $0.34/hr.
Option one: Wan 2.6 endpoints
Wan 2.6 is the closest thing to Wan 2.7 you can use today, with no setup:
- Wan 2.6 T2V – video from a text prompt. $0.50 per five seconds at 480p, $2.25 per 10 seconds at 720p.
- Wan 2.6 I2V – animates a reference image, with audio. $0.10/second at 720p, $0.15/second at 1080p.
- Wan 2.6 T2I – images at $0.03 each, useful for producing reference frames to feed into I2V.
Billing is per request, so idle time costs nothing. Each endpoint also exposes a REST API for production pipelines. Full walkthrough: How to use Wan 2.6 on Runpod.
Option two: self-host Wan 2.2
If you need LoRAs, ControlNet, or a custom node graph, Wan 2.2 is the newest version you can download. Alibaba publishes TI2V-5B for lighter setups, plus I2V-A14B, T2V-A14B, S2V-14B, and Animate-14B for higher quality.
Typical GPU choices, at Community Cloud rates:
- RTX 4090, 24 GB – from $0.34/hr
- RTX 5090, 32 GB – from $0.69/hr
- L40S, 48 GB – from $0.79/hr
- A100 PCIe, 80 GB – from $1.19/hr
- H100 PCIe, 80 GB – from $1.99/hr
Quantized builds of the 14B variants run on a 24 GB card, and the 5B model is more forgiving still. Pods bill by the second, and pod storage is ephemeral – attach a network volume to keep model files between sessions. Setup detail: Wan 2.2 ComfyUI: run Wan 2.2 on Runpod.
Wrapping up
Use the Wan 2.6 endpoints if you want the most capable Wan model available with nothing to install. Self-host Wan 2.2 if you need LoRAs, a custom workflow, or sustained volume where hourly billing beats per-clip pricing. Plenty of teams use both – endpoints for production traffic, a pod for building the workflow that feeds it.
Try the Wan 2.6 endpoints, or deploy a pod to run Wan 2.2 yourself.
FAQ
Is Wan 2.7 open source?
No. Hugging Face publishes Wan weights up to Wan 2.2, and Alibaba's announcement points only to hosted API access. Wan 2.2 is the newest version with downloadable weights.
When was Wan 2.7 released?
Alibaba announced the Wan2.7-Video suite on 7 April 2026, shortly after Wan2.7-Image.
Can I run Wan 2.7 locally?
No. Without public weights there is nothing to download, so local deployment isn't possible regardless of hardware. Wan 2.2 is the newest version you can run yourself.
What's the difference between Wan 2.7 and Wan 2.6?
Wan 2.7 adds thinking mode, which plans a prompt before generation, and deeper editing control over actions, dialogue, scenes, style, and camera work on an existing clip. It also handles up to five consistent characters and re-syncs lip movement when dialogue is rewritten. Wan 2.6 introduced reference-to-video and multi-shot storytelling, and is available on Runpod today.
What does Wan cost on Runpod?
Wan 2.6 image-to-video is $0.10/second at 720p and $0.15/second at 1080p. Wan 2.6 text-to-video is $0.50 per five seconds at 480p. Wan 2.2 image-to-video is $0.30 per five seconds. Running Wan 2.2 on a pod starts at $0.34/hr on Community Cloud, billed by the second.
